History of the Bomboniera

Bombonieras or wedding favours are a tradition that originated from Italian and French aristocracy centuries ago.

After a celebration, European aristocracy would send their guests home with a small gift called a bonbonniere, or in Italian, bomboniere.

These were given out  in the form of gold, precious stones, crystal or porcelain.

The contents of these gifts, sugared almonds were of great value as sugar was an expensive delicacy which was thought to have medicinal properties.

Throughout the following centuries the cost of sugar declined and sugared almonds were mass produced, these were named 'confetti' and were handed out to guests as a thank you and gesture of gratitude from the bride and groom at weddings or by the parents at a christening.

Today the bomboniera / wedding favour is given in European and Mediteranean countries, usually made from lace, net or tulle with flowers and ribbons and containing the traditional 5 sugared almonds or chocolate dragees to symbolise health, wealth, fertility, happiness and long life.

We have created a beautiful and elegant collection of favours that we hope will make your special day, one that your guests will remember too.
